Your route to an undergraduate degree in engineering or computer science

The Engineering and Computer Science Foundation is a specialist, one-year course that will prepare you for studying a degree in engineering, computing or a combination of both subjects, at a top university. You will deepen your knowledge of academic subjects through a range of core and optional modules and improve your English language level. Our experienced teachers will provide exceptional individual support to ensure you have the knowledge and confidence you need to thrive at university. On successful completion of the programme you will progress to undergraduate degree study at your chosen university, subject to meeting the institution’s conditions of entry.

What you will study

The Engineering and Computer Science Foundation combines specialist subject modules with English language classes. All classes are taught in English to help prepare you for the rigours of studying abroad. You will study core subjects and choose an additional module based on your intended progression degree.

Core modules

You will study all of the following core modules:

  • This module provides you with thorough training in the language and related academic skills which will enable you to achieve your academic potential at university. You will develop awareness and competency in a range of language-related skills required for successful university study, including academic writing, effective reading strategies, how to participate in seminars and deliver presentations, and listening to and recording information effectively from lectures. You will learn how to communicate accurately in written and spoken English with clarity and confidence.
     
  • This module provides you with a strong foundation in mathematical modelling and core mathematics skills, preparing you for undergraduate study in subjects with a significant mathematical focus. It enhances your mathematical skills and problem-solving techniques while developing your ability to assimilate and communicate highly technical information.
     
  • This module enhances your understanding of statistics and its application to complex sustainability challenges in Science, Engineering, and Business. Aligned with the United Nations’ Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) goals, it teaches you to apply statistical expertise to real-world problems while developing project planning, management, and effective communication skills.
     

Optional modules

You will choose to study one of the following modules:

  • This module provides you with a fundamental understanding of computer science concepts and principles. You will develop computational thinking skills and apply them in practical contexts.
     
  • This module offers you a comprehensive introduction to fundamental concepts in physics. It also develops your skills in interpreting mathematical models, and teaches you to conduct, evaluate, and analyse experimental data.
     
  • This module establishes a strong foundation in chemistry, covering atomic structure, chemical bonding, reactions, and thermodynamics. You will develop skills in interpreting chemical data, including graphical and statistical analysis, and learn to conduct, evaluate, and analyse experimental data in the laboratory.

Our expert team will guide you in making an informed decision based on your specific academic interests and career ambitions, ensuring a seamless transition into your chosen engineering or computer science degree.

Course length:
Two semesters (one year)

Start dates:
The start dates are in September and July for those taking the English Language Preparation Programme.

Age:
16.5 to 19 years

English language requirements:
IELTS 5.0 (with a minimum of 4.5 in all skills) or equivalent. Those with a lower score may attend the additional English Language Preparation Programme.

Entry requirements:
Grade 11 and Grade 12 graduates with an average score above 60%.
